Overview of the common Baofeng

Baofeng handheld radios are versatile and capable dual-band radios that cover a wide range of frequencies, making them a popular choice among amateur radio enthusiasts and preppers. These radios operate on both VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) bands, specifically 136-174 MHz (VHF) and 400-520 MHz (UHF). In addition to these bands, Baofeng radios can transmit on FRS (Family Radio Service), GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service), MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service), and the Marine VHF band. They also have the capability to receive weather broadcasts from NOAA, making them highly versatile for various communication needs.

There are numerous models of Baofeng radios available on the market, partly due to the presence of copycats and the frequent reuse of the Baofeng name by various manufacturers. However, the models listed below are ones that I have personally owned and tested. These selections represent a range of features and capabilities, ensuring reliable performance and value for different needs and preferences. Each of these radios has been evaluated for their practical utility in various scenarios, making them trustworthy choices for anyone looking to invest in a dependable handheld radio.

The UV-5R ($15-20)

It’s not waterproof, it has poor quality control, it can only do FM, but you can buy these on sale at the price of $30 for two.  A fully charged battery will potentially last years on standby/power off.  This radio is capable of transmitting on 136-174MHz and 400-480MHz and is completely programmable from the front display and keypad.  One thing to note though, is that these radios are sometimes “frequency locked” due to FCC complaints.  You can usually unlock them by holding a combination of buttons.

To do this, turn your radio off, press and hold the VFO/MR, MON, and PTT buttons while turning the radio back on. When you see the word FACTORY displayed on the screen, the radio will be unlocked.

The aftermarket for this radio is huge.  The kenwood connector allows you to attach it to your electronic earpro.  The battery can be upgraded to accept USB charging.  The antenna can be upgraded to one that is optimized for the frequency you plan on using.

There are also better options though.  For hard use, these will not hold up.  I left one in my enduro tailbox for over a year, and when I finally went to use it, the squelch had stopped working regardless of any factory resets I did to it.  As mentioned before, they can also get wet and stop working.  Be aware of this possiblilty.  If you go this route, keep your radio dry and protected, it is fragile like your cell phone.

The GT3-WP $30

The GT3WP functions the same as a UV-5R, but with the added benefit of IP67 waterproofing.  It also has a guarded volume knob, which is nice.  You can usually get these for about $30 on Amazon.  If you want to use Kenwood connectors with them, you will need to buy a special adapter as well, because the side connection is a special waterproof type.  I have linked one above but please read reviews and make sure it is compatible with the exact variant you purchase.  There are a lot of bad adapters out there, but this one should work with the GT3-WP.

There is also a UV9R Plus that is essentially the same thing.  The UV9G is not the same thing.  It is permanently locked to only use GMRS frequencies.  No unlock is known as of this time.  It is recommended that you avoid it.

UV-13 Pro or TP-8 Plus

I can’t seem to find these anywhere now, but I will link them when they become available again on the US market.  I purchased several awhile back because they have a little bit nicer interface.  You can switch the display to single channel mode and show both the frequency you are on and what you named that channel.  You can do this for 999 channels, or group your channels into 100, 200, 300, etc.  as you see fit.  They also have a USB-C port in the battery for charging so you don’t have to have a dock or purchase a special battery.  I bought mine for about 15 dollars each, which was an insane value at the time.  There are some quirks to programming these and unlocking them, but unlike the UV-5R style radios, you can actually reflash the firmware on these with a DFU/Recovery mode.  Mine were able to unlock to 136-174MHz and 400-520MHz, with some roll off on power around 500MHz.  TX power is usually going to be 5 watts out of the connector, plus whatever antenna gain you end up using.  Overall these can be insanely good value when they are available.  They are not waterproof, and will need to be treated like your cell phone, just like the UV-5R.

Commonly Used Accessories for Baofeng Radios

Enhance the functionality and versatility of your Baofeng radios with these essential accessories. Each item is selected to improve your radio’s performance, ease of use, and reliability, making them indispensable for preppers and militia groups. I have not purchased all of these things, because my needs are different than yours may be.

Extended Battery Packs

Increase your radio’s runtime with high-capacity battery packs. These batteries ensure that your radio stays powered longer during critical operations. This one is rechargeable via USB-C which is super nice.

Speaker Microphones

Improve communication clarity and ease of use, especially in noisy environments, with high-quality speaker microphones. These mics clip onto your shirt or gear for convenient access. They allow for communication through your electronic ear protection via the headphone jack. This brand is really good, in my experience a lot of other brands are poor quality. If you’re gonna buy a Kenwood style mic, buy this one.

High-Gain Antennas

Boost your radio’s signal range and reception with high-gain antennas. These antennas ensure clearer communication over greater distances.

Programming Cables

Easily program your radio with custom frequencies and settings using CHIRP software. Programming cables make it simple to configure your radio for any scenario. You will need this if your radio didn’t come with one.

Battery Eliminator

Power your radio directly from a vehicle’s 12V outlet with a battery eliminator. This accessory is perfect for extended use in vehicles without worrying about battery life. I don’t own one of these personally but for a cost effective vehicle radio setup it’s a good idea.

Dual Push-to-Talk (PTT) Microphones

Allow for seamless switching between two frequencies with dual PTT microphones. These mics are ideal for managing multiple communication channels efficiently. I don’t run typically use dual radios so I don’t own one of these personally. This one works with Peltor style earpro.

Antenna Adapters

Connect your Baofeng radio to different types of antennas with antenna adapters. These adapters provide compatibility and flexibility for various communication needs.

Each of these accessories enhances the functionality, convenience, and reliability of your Baofeng radios, making them more effective for prepping and militia uses. Equip yourself with these essential tools to ensure you are always ready for any communication challenge.
